Tournament Rules it-ASL-ia 2011

Changes in the rules from 2010 edition are in italics.

General: The main event will be a 5 turns Swiss style affair, in the 3rd-4th-5th rounds mini-tournaments will start between the initial defeated, so you won't need to win all your matches in order to take home some wood. If you are not a tournament type you can also come and play some very good Italian players that prefer social over competitive play. The winner will get the main prize, there will be some minor prizes (also ASL stuff) for the 2nd and 3rd positions and for the winner of the consolation tournament as well. The winner of the consolation tournament is who has the higher final score among those who had zero points after round 2 . Each player partecipating to the main tournament who loses the first two games, will play ALSO in the consolation tournament at no further cost.

Tournament format: The tournament is a 5 round swiss-style tournament. Swiss style means that in each round, you will play an opponent who has won/lost about the same number of games as you. When you play a match you will get 3 points for winning, 1 point for a draw and 0 for losing. For first round (only) best players, according the AREA rating, cannot be paired. If players are odd, one of the top players (again according AREA) will gain a “bye” in round one. In subsequent rounds, the odd player gaing the bye is always the one at the bottom of the table.
After the first round, players are paired on basis of their scores, meaning that you will get to play a opponent who has (about) the same number of points that you have. Players who have won all their games are usually seeded among each other, unless odd for some reason. This pairing is repeated for each succeeding round. Nobody can play twice against the same opponent OR gain two “byes”.

Choosing which scenario to play:
There are two ways of choosing a scenario:
1) you could agree on one of the three scenarios. Note that Players by mutual agreement could select a scenario (side and balance included) from any prior round (EXC: any 4th round scenario is NA). Nobody can play the same scenario twice.
2) use the following method: both of you choose one of the 3 scenarios which you will not play, and give the other two a priority.
Then there are 3 possible outcomes:
a) you have chosen to delete two different scenarios, and you play the remaining one;
b) you have deleted the same one, and chosen the same scenario as 1st priority, you play this one;
c) you have deleted the same but chosen a different scenario as first priority, you roll a die to determine which scenario to play.
Each player planning to attend can request us any scenario scheduled for the tournament in case he need it.

ABS: We shall use ABS (Australian Balance System) with all of the scenarios. Included in the scenario list will be the ABS for all the scenarios which will be sent/given to future participant not later than one month before the tournament.
NOTE: the bids have effect ONLY if players choose the same side. If one player bids for the attacker and the other for defender, the balances offered are ingnored and each player take the side he chose with no balance.

Parallel Round PTO:
In the 5th round a supplemental set of 3 scenarios featuring Japaneses and/or PTO is provided. Before the tournament starts all players who prefer the supplemental set instead of the ordinary list provided for round 5 must communicate their choice to the TDs.
Then there are 3 possible outcomes:
A) Both players want to play "Japaneses and/or PTO" (PTO to shorten) : they choose a scenario from the "PTO " list according the usual procedure
B) None of Them want to play PTO: they choose a scenario from the ordinary list according the usual procedure
C) one would play PTO but the other disagrees: they choose a scenario from the ordinary list but the player who opted to play PTO has two minor advantages: 1) if the players have deleted the same scenario giving different priorities, the player who opted to play PTO choose the scenario to play (no DR needed); 2) If both players make the same identical bid the player who opted to play PTO is assumed to have won the choice (no DR needed).

Rules: The tournament uses the official ASL Rules, 2nd. edition. All official errata and known Q&A/clarifications are also applied.

Rolling the dice: Some kind of dice-rolling equipment is required. You can use a dice-cup, throw the dice into a glass, use a dice-tower, or throw the dice into a box or something similar. Whatever the method used, your opponent must be able to see the result at the same time that you are. Both players must agree on the dice used or the matter will be resolved by the TD.

Deciding games: If two players are unable to finish a game within the allotted time, they have to decide the outcome of the scenario, using one of these three methods:
-Mutual agreement, the players agrees on a winner or a tie.
-Roll the dice! (players could also apply a DRM)
-Let the TD and his assistants decide the game.

Setting Up the Game and Time limits: In order to avoid unnecessary waste of time players should have a minimum grasp of scenarios order of battle, set up and victory conditions (expecially for the morning rounds which are the most time constrained), they are also strongly invited (plane travellers are of course extempted) to bring counters, boards and overlays for the scenarios they are planning to play, in order to reduce dead times to the minimum. The defender has 20 minutes for the set-up, the attacker has 30 minutes. If the setup is off board the time is halved. Every delay has to be promptly communicated to the TDs and will be a factor in deciding a match unfinished within the allotted time. If both players agree they can play without time limits on friday night (Round 2) and Saturday night (round 4). Otherwise no game can continue beyond midnight.
We suggest to prepare your defensive set-up in advance and write it on paper or print it by VASL, to reduce time spent.

Boards: IT-ASL-IA is the first tournament where staff provides enough boards for everyone. We use boards printed from VASL with all terrain modifications already applied. Their use is optional and both players must agree to use them.

Determining the final rank in the tournament:
The winner of the tournament is the person who scores more points in the tournament. The final rank of all players is determined by their points at the end of the tournament. For players with equal scores, the following tiebreakers are used in the listed order:
# 1) Outcome of the direct game between the players (if any); if > 2 players have the same score this tiebreaker is NA.
# 2) Median Buchholtz coefficients (the sum of the final scores of your opponents in the tournament ignoring the best and the worst score); note that a "bye" still gives the winner for Buchholtz purpose at the end of tournament the points of the “virtual” player that has the average points of the best and of the worst player (FRD).
#3) round where the player lost his first game (the later the better).
If the tiebreaker is a tie as well, the two players in question share the same rank.

Prizes: There will be medals and/or trophies for the best 3 results. There will be a prize for the winner, runner up and third placed. We’ll have ASL stuff from MMP and TPPs.

Tournament fee: You will pay a euros 25 fee for this three day tournament. Any player not partecipating to the main event is welcomed for free non competitive playing, and will pay only 15 euros.

Supply and food: ADJACENT to the playing area there are a bar and low-cost restaurant for food on Friday evening and Saturday at noon. Saturday evening a quick "Tournament Dinner" is scheduled at low prices in the restaurant.
